Dear Commandress – What Shoes Should I Wear with the Lela Rose Dress for the Neiman Marcus + Target Collection?

Today’s Commandress post addresses a question posed by Reader B about the beautiful Lela Rose Dress (shown below) from the Neiman Marcus + Target Collection:

Great review Commandress! I am also in love with my dress. This was the first time Lela Rose and Neiman Marcus were accessible to me – and the experience has been great. The only issue I’m having is finding shoes. Any recommendations?

I’ve also been mulling over which shoes would look best with my Lela Rose Dress (shown here), which recently received this glowing recommendation from Commandress. I’ve found several fun and very tempting options in a wide range of prices.

The dress has a couple features that make finding the right shoes a little tricky. First, although the print and high-low hemline are contemporary, the fit and flare silhouette is retro (all the way down to the tulle netting!). To avoid turning the dress into a costume, your shoes (and other accessories) should be a combination of sleek, classic and contemporary. I’ve included several examples of shoes below – and you’ll see that many of them are by Nina.

Second, the high-low hemline ends at the knee on the front of the dress, but ends mid-calf on the back of the dress. A mid-calf hemline can look very elegant – but it also has the potential to look frumpy with the wrong shoe. You should pair the dress with the highest heel you can tolerate – which might be higher for a dinner out than it would be for a cocktail party. Shoes with pointy toes and T-straps can also make your legs look longer. If the shoe includes straps around your ankles, they should dip in the front to create a V-shape pointing toward your toes (check out the Via Spiga Pamela below) to make your legs look longer. I’d advise against horizontal ankle straps with this dress because they can make your legs look shorter.

As for color, the dress’ gorgeous watercolor floral print means you can have a lot of fun with your shoes and other accessories. My favorite colors to wear with this dress are dark purple, plum, royal blue (which is a little brighter than navy) and dark silver (such as gunmetal or pewter).

As an aside, I was very pleased to discover that I already have a great option in my closet – the Calvin Klein Dolly in Metallic Velvet Plum (pictured here). I would love to recommend this exact shoe, but I bought it three years ago and the color is long gone. That said, the Calvin Klein Dolly is a fantastic and reasonably-priced pump that is always available in an amazing array of colors – including the Gunmetal Metallic Shimmer shown below.

Here’s a knockout. The Via Spiga Pamela Sandal in Purple is not just purple – it’s iridescent purple and teal. I wouldn’t last long in a 4 1/2 inch heel (with a 1/2 platform) – but I would give this shoe my very best effort. The Pamela Sandal in Purple is available for $250 from Nordstrom and Dillards (which has currently marked the shoe down to $187.50).

If you prefer  evening shoes with some bling, check out the amazing Badgley Mischka Salsa in Purple, which combines sheeny satin with sparkly crystal. The sleek Nina Bessy in Ultra-Violet Satin features a closed toe and a 2 1/2 heel. It is currently available from Zappos for $60.99 (reduced from $79).

Finally, if you prefer glittery evening shoes, I’d recommend a darker silver like this Nina Fern Pump in Pewter. It has a 3 inch heel and is $79 from Zappos – which also carries gorgeous versions of the Fern Pump in New Navy and Grape.
