The weekly Commandress feature ‘Fashion Flashback’ by Amy (Bergsma) Schwarzenbach features the author’s 1980s fashion retrospectives as a new way to understand – and inspire – contemporary fashion styles.
Do you have fond memories of summer camp? We already know that summer camp is not Commandress’ natural habitat, but I have loved it since the very beginning of my first camp session in Maine in the mid-1980s.
My camp uniform looked a lot like this Camp Beverly Hills t-shirt and shorts (minus the contemporary fit and better fabrics).
This summer – in addition to my annual foray at Camp Country Lad on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau in Monterey, TN – I will also be traveling to Colorado Springs, CO.
And in true Commandress fashion, I will be wearing dresses throughout my travels.
Before you roll your eyes and assume I will be a fish out of water – a true city girl sticking out like a sore thumb – let me share with you my new favorite warm weather outfit: the sport dress.
Earlier this spring, I bought two Prana Amaya ($75-$80 from Zappos) dresses and quickly fell in love.
My new dresses have been perfect for festivals, picnics, dinners and even errand-running. They are comfortable, cool, easy to care for, and so flattering.
Right now, Zappos is carrying the Prana Amaya dress in several patterns and colors. Here are a few of my favorites:
If you like a deal, head over to 6pm.com for the Prana Amaya Dress in Ink Blue Lagoon or Black Lagoon for $41.99 (regulalry $75).
Another awesome sport dress is Patagonia’s Margo Dress ($65 from Zappos) – shown here in Big Poppy/Whiskey Plum.
You can also check out the same dress in a different pattern on sale from 6pm. Here is the Patagonia Margo Dress in Dewdrop Flower ($31.99; regularly $65).
