Dear Commandress – Can You Recommend Any Pretty Business Card Cases?

Today’s Commandress post addresses a question recently posed by Reader J:

Dear Commandress: Lately, I’ve been looking for a pretty business card case. This may not be the most exciting “Dear Commandress” request, but maybe at some point, if you run across a stylish option, would you please post it? I bet that there are other women out there who are tired of carrying the ugly black vinyl cases that come with the box of business cards.

This is a great question, Reader J, and I am pleased to report that you do not have to settle for ugly black vinyl! There are a lot of pretty business card cases to choose from – including lovely card cases that are very affordable. This is the type of item that is perfect for internet browsing. Who knows when you would run into these card cases in person, but the online selection is fantastic. Here are some of my favorites:

Classic Business Card Cases

Here is a very conservative – but also pretty – option to consider if conservative seems most appropriate for your workplace. This Bosca Old Leather Card Case is a classic design from a high-quality brand in an interesting color – dark purple. The Bosca Old Leather Card Case is also available in black, dark brown and bright red for $65 from

The Dooney & Bourke Python-Embossed Flap Business Card Case in blue leather has a simple envelope design and muted color. This chic, pretty and understated card case is available from Dooney & Bourke for $45.

Colorful Business Card Cases

A popular way to add interest to a classic business card case design is to use cheerful and unexpected colors. The Lodis Audrey Mini Card Case (pictured on the far left) in berry leather has bright marigold trim. The Audrey case is also available in teal/marigold, toffee/chocolate, lime/flamingo, black/red and red/black. I’ve had a Lodis card case for years and it looks like I bought it yesterday. The Lodis Audrey Mini Card Case is available from Lodis for $35; it is also available from Nordstrom in teal/marigold for $35. Another fun option is this Crocodile-Embossed Business Card Holder (pictured on the near left) that is available in pink, blue, orange and lime green for $50 from Neiman Marcus.

Several years ago I gave a friend a Kate Spade New York card case as a graduation gift – she still loves it. There are a few different colors on Kate Spade’s website, but my current favorite is the Mikas Pond Holly Card Case in Sugared Grape – a bold and rich purple in a durable saffiano leather. The Mikas Pond Holly Card Case is available from Kate Spade for $58.

Budd Leather offers an Oversized Business Card Case in lizard-printed leather in a wide range of colors: orange (shown here), red, pink, lime green, cognac, tan and black. The Budd Leather Oversized Business Card Case is available from eBags for $33 – and on sale for $26.40 through 8/21/12.

If you’re comfortable with a “creative professional” look, I love this Lodis Accessories Kaleidoscope Mini Card Case, which is made from patterned leather. The Lodis Accessories Kaleidoscope Mini Card Case is $40.99 (reduced from $49) from

Metallic Business Card Cases

Another fun option is a sleek and streamlined design in a metallic color. The Halogen Leather Card Case (shown on the far left) is available in pewter and gold for $30 from Nordstrom. If you would like something a little larger, the Tusk Ltd. Business Card Case (shown on the near left) includes an ID window and two interior card slots. This case is available from eBags in silver and gold for $48 – and on sale for $36 through 8/21/12.

This Lodis Aurora Mini Card Case is another lovely metallic option. It is made from embossed stingray with metallic accents and has a Lodis hardware logo. The Lodis Aurora Mini Card Case is available in carbon (shown here) and almond (a golden metallic) from Lodis for $38.

Smart, Chic and Made in the USA – American-Made Business Card Cases

Here are two beautiful, American-made card cases from Lauren Merkin. The first is a Mini Wallet that has one exterior and three interior compartments – perfect for traveling light. The Mini Wallet is available in eggplant ostrich (shown here), sienna ostrich, olive ostrich, and black glitter stingray for $95 from Lauren Merkin. The second design is a simple studded Card Case that is available in cognac (shown here), cobalt, red and black for $35 from Lauren Merkin.

Luxury Business Card Cases

Last but not least, there are plenty of luxurious and expensive business card cases to admire. Here are a few splurge-worthy options if you are looking for a special gift.

First, this Prada Saffiano Lux Flap Card Case is a gorgeous card case in a durable leather. I love the pink color combined with the gold logo (although one Saks reviewer complains that the pink leather is much darker in person). The Prada Saffiano Lux Flap Card Case is available in black and pink from Saks for $165.

Next, if you want something that is both luxurious and a little subversive,  this Alexander McQueen Envelope Card Holder in Royal Blue (shown here) or Cherry is the one for you. The description says it all: the card case is decorated with a “ghastly gold-tone Alexander McQueen skull with pearlescent eyes.” The Alexander McQueen Envelope Card Holder is $160 from

Finally, my favorite of the luxury card cases is the Smythson Stamped Leather Card Case in rich purple with a gold-tone slide closure. This card case is classic, gorgeous, and memorable – I might be tempted to walk around holding this card case in plain sight all day long if there were any chance that I might want to give someone my card. The Smythson Stamped Leather Card Case is available for $206.25 from

Hi Victoria – Thank you for all of your great comments! I was not contractually obligated to include a business card holder by Prada, so I didn’t have to – I wanted to.

I hope you agree that it’s great to see so many beauties in the $25-40 range too!

“Reader J” thanks you for this immensely helpful post. Wow! I had no idea that there were so many options. The Kate Spade case in sugared grape may be my favorite. I’ve started a birthday wish list from your posts! Thanks again for bringing beauty and art into the often grey, black, and navy world of the professional workplace.
