For today’s dressed up style post, we’re helping Reader N find the perfect dress to wear to a summer wedding.
In August, I’m attending a late afternoon wedding in Chicago. The reception will go into the evening. I’d like a dress with sleeves that is chic, not frumpy…and I thought I had found it until… well… the dress I’ve fallen in love with is off-white embroidered with delicate butterflies, but it costs so, so, so much more than I want to spend. Help!
Dear Reader N,
Oh, how I feel your pain. Like you, I have a knack for falling in love with exorbitantly expensive dresses.
First, let me ask you a question. Will you use this dress for other occasions? If so, you may be able to justify the expense.
If not, the good news is that you’ve started shopping early; time is on your side.
There are two approaches you can take. First, look for a dress made by high quality brands that sell for a more palatable price. Second, look for a dress on sale.
Below are six dresses perfect for your event at more affordable prices.
Top Row, Left to Right: Ted Baker London’s Marcela Acanthus Scroll-Print Sheath Dress in Light Pink may be a little bit of a stretch price-wise, but the floral print is so charming I just had to include it ($285, free shipping, sizes 0-10 from Neiman Marcus – take $50 off $200). I love Talbots’ Evening Garden Dress in Indigo Blue Multi, and I believe it is perfect for your event ($126.75, online/catalog exclusive, sizes 2-20). Because it is 81% off the original price at Saks Off 5th Elie Tahari’s Emory Mesh-Panel Dress is selling fast (Sale price: $74.99, currently available in sizes 0, 6, 10, 12 & 14).
Bottom Row, Left to Right: I’ve been a fan of Dillard’s Antonio Melani brand for a long time. Its quality always well exceeds the price. This Angie Laser Cut Dress in Iris is gorgeous and the laser cut design adds a trendy detail to a classic style ($179, sizes 0-14). Anthropologie’s HD by Paris Theodora Midi Dress in Red Motif is a classic A-line dress with a pretty floral print that would be a great addition to your wardrobe ($156, sizes 00-16). The perfect travel-friendly dress for an out of town event is Komarov Print Chiffon A-Line Dress in Purple Madeira from Nordstrom (Sale price: $212.40, available in S, M, & XL, Made in USA).
In addition to looking to mainstays like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, check their discount sites as well. They are Last Call, Saks Off 5th and Nordstrom Rack, respectively. Other retailers like Dillards, Talbots and Anthropologie are good candidates as well.
A few additional points. With so many stores and brands to choose from, there is no reason you can’t find a dress you love within your budget. The price of a dress is less important than how you feel in it and how it looks on you. And don’t hesitate to take a dress to a tailor for any nips and tucks that will make it look perfect on you.
In closing, I’m confident you will find the perfect dress and have a great time at the wedding!
