In the Commandress feature Class It Up, contributor Amy (Bergsma) Schwarzenbach draws on her legal industry experience – including some of the mistakes she saw along the way – to share ideas for taking your work wardrobe to the next level.
Hoorah! I was so excited when California legislators voted to ban stores from sending shoppers away with their goods in single-use plastic bags last month. Now, if only every other state would follow suit, our nation could better attack the epidemic of litter that pervades just about every place you look.
Just the other day I was walking my dog in a picturesque park when the idyllic scene was interrupted by a plastic bag lying in the middle of a beautiful green field – an eyesore that at best ruined the view and at worst will one day contribute to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Single-use plastic bags have been one of my pet peeves for years. As hard as I try not to acquire them, they seem to accumulate like fruit flies near the compost bin. Do we really want to leave our descendants with this legacy of garbage?
Let me put it to you this way: trash is “trashy.” I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be judged as trashy; therefore, I minimize the trash in my life.
Whether you live in California, want to be less wasteful or just think now is the time to “Class It Up,” this is a great time to invest in reusable shopping bags.
I really like the Stash It Reusable Bag because it folds into a small pouch that fits in your purse, but it can hold up to 35 pounds ($14.99 in three different prints from The Container Store).
Regular Commandress readers know peacocks are near and dear to our hearts. Among other wonderful things, peacocks signify integrity and refinement. Enough said! Rejuvenate your self-esteem with Blue Q’s Peacock Shopper Bag made from 95% recycled materials ($13.54 sale; regularly $20 from ASOS).
Every woman is the boss of somebody or something. I’ve been a fan of “Boss Lady” emblazoned items for years and encourage all ladies to reveal their inner boss lady with this sassy Frontier Natural Foods Boss Lady Reusable Shopping Bag ($19.79 from Unbeatable Sale).
Ever wonder what women carried to shop before the era of disposable bags? Woven baskets! If you want to go old-school, consider Eco Displayware’s Rattan Shopping Basket ($33.56 on sale through 9/22/14 with code EVENT20; regularly $52 from Bellacor). You may just set a trend among your fellow shoppers.

Do you want to take things a step further? Another pet peeve of mine is the single-use water bottle. Nothing is much easier than refilling up a reusable water bottle. But wait . . . you don’t like the taste of water in reusable plastic bottles? Never fear, there is a solution: glass water bottles!
I really like Lifefactory’s 22 Ounce Glass Water Bottle with a Silicone Sleeve in Midnight Blue or Spring green ($19.99 from Drugstore.com).
Eco Vessel’s 14 ounce Vue Insulated Glass Water Bottle accommodates cold or hot beverages with its double-layer of glass ($17.95 in three different colors from Backcountry.com).
Finally, consider the CamelBak .7L Eddy Glass Water Bottle ($25 in four different colors from Backcountry.com).
